Portugal finding it difficult to maintain neutrality in view of Spanish diplomatic pressure. Importance of France's pro-British attitude. Suggests he might be authorised to renew King of Great Britain's offer to compose the `unhappy difference' between the French and Portuguese Crowns. Rumoured that he is to be replaced by another envoy from England `charged with fresh instructions to prevent this Court's entering into Spanish measures.' Hopes this is untrue.
