Folio 278: James Dormer to Duke of Newcastle. British naval movements. Algerines expected to declare war on France. Court news. State of the royal marriage negotiations. Portugal finding it difficult to maintain neutrality in view of Spanish diplomatic pressure. Importance of France's pro-British attitude. Suggests he might be authorised to renew King of Great Britain's offer to compose the `unhappy difference' between the French and Portuguese Crowns. Rumoured that he is to be replaced by another envoy from England `charged with fresh instructions to prevent this Court's entering into Spanish measures.' Hopes this is untrue. Two Portuguese warships cruising against the Algerines. Court news. Rumoured Spanish design against Gibraltar and likelihood of a war between Great Britain and Spain.
