Folio 266: Thomas Burnett to Duke of Newcastle. King of Portugal hopes that the Marquis of Abrantes, who is very soon going to Madrid, will be able to persuade the Spanish royal family to let the marriages go through without insisting on an offensive and defensive alliance as Spanish and Austrian governments have done hitherto. Thinks Portuguese Court will take no further steps until after Parliament has met in London and French policy has been clarified. He has not yet received an answer to his letter of 25 Oct. (f.219) but `I will wait your commands in relation thereto with the utmost resignation.'.
