Description

Folio 210: James Dormer to Duke of Newcastle. Great civility and help shown by the Portuguese in provisioning British fleet much resented by Spaniards who have brought pressure on Portuguese Court diplomatically to expedite their departure. Rumours concerning the royal marriages and the Infante Dom Manuel. Pro-Austrian influence at the Spanish Court. News of the Flota at Havana. Reported capture of H.M.S. Diamond by a Spanish warship off Honduras. Arrival of richly laden Rio de Janeiro Fleet and details of gold on board. Dutch have demanded restitution of their ship and goods seized at Rio de Janeiro. Absconding fraudulent debtor deported back to Portugal and goods of British merchants traced and restored to them at Rio (f.35). auto da fé at Lisbon and heroic death of a Portuguese Jew who refused to recant. Dutch peace with Algerines.
