Folio 159: News from Madrid. General opinion in Lisbon `that it will be very difficult to make Spain forego their demand upon Gibraltar and Port Mahon.' Spanish ambassador has told him no Spanish minister would venture to advise dropping claim for Gibraltar. He is convinced occupation of Gibraltar and Port Mahon is of greatest advantage to British trade in the Mediterranean where there are now eight ships, `to one of all other nations put together.' Escape of an Algerine chased by the Dutch into Gibraltar and Dutch annoyance thereat. Alarm over plague reported at Leghorn, now contradicted. Disputes between Papacy and Crown of Portugal still unsettled. Four exiled noblemen been recalled, having proved their non-involvement in the original affair. Dutch naval movements.
