Folio 343: James Dormer to Duke of Newcastle. His discussions with Diogo de Mendonça Corte-Real over the possible disadvantages to Great Britain of a treaty of alliance between Spain, Portugal and the Empire, and Mendonça's soothing reassurances, which he is now inclined to take at face value. Looks as if the Spelman-Butler imbroglio may soon be settled. Thinks it tactless to press Mendonça on `the difference between this Court and Spain' [obviously a mistake for France], as both Portuguese ministers have now left Paris (cf. ff.182, 192). Arrival of the Pernambuco fleet.
Date and place: 1725 Dec 1, NS Lisbon.
