Description

Folio 320: James Dormer to Duke of Newcastle. His discussions with Diogo de Mendonça Corte-Real on the possible repercussions of the Spanish-Portuguese marriage treaty and projected treaty of commerce. Mendonça's polite but evasive attitude. He suspects that King John V has `either acceded to the Alliance between the Emperor and Spain, or promised to do it.' Will protest in the strongest terms over the Cabinda affair (f.276) on behalf of the Royal African Company. His own reassurances to Mendonça on the Butler-Spelman imbroglio.
