Folio 276: James Dormer to Duke of Newcastle. His discussion with the Secretary of State on Anglo-Portuguese relations, diplomatic break with France over the Abbé de Livry, guarantee of the Austrian Succession, and dangers of Spanish-Austrian commercial treaty. Private audience. Second interview with Secretary of State and latter's polite but evasive attitude. Seizure of the delinquent Thomas Spelman and resulting difficulties with the Portuguese authorities, who have imprisoned the King's Messenger, Thomas Butler, in reprisal. Copies of relevant correspondence enclosed (ff.282-83). Laborious justification of his and Burnett's procedure, and tactless behaviour of Thomas Butler.
