Folio 232: William Cayley to Lord Viscount Townshend. Most of the robbed mail (ff.226, 228) has been recovered intact, but an official cyphered letter had been removed and dispatches to the Portuguese Court had been opened. Local reports that Stanhope, British ambassador at Madrid, `was privy to it'. Issue of Spanish-Portuguese marriage negotiations very uncertain, but Secretary of State has gone out of his way to demonstrate his King's friendship when issuing a passport for Brazil.
