Folio 131: Thomas Saunderson to Duke of Newcastle. Will continue to keep him fully informed. Details of the protocol dispute over the Abbé de Livry, and copies of the supporting documents (ff.135-54). He emphasizes that the King of Portugal was responsible for taking this stand, and will not easily depart from it `unless forced to it by the utmost extremity.' He hopes that somehow de Livry might remain here as Minister, since he will be on such bad terms with the Portuguese government that he will never be able to foster French trade to the detriment of the British, as a French ambassador in good standing could undoubtedly do. Strong criticism of French policy and of general poverty of France in the Lisbon Gazette. Has heard nothing about the Bombay Anglo-Portuguese dispute since the time of his arrival but will scrape acquaintance with the new Viceroy of Goa, `and use my best endeavours to keep him in a reasonable way of thinking.'.
