Folio 97: Thomas Lumley to Lord Carteret. Alvar of 9 Aug. (f.55) still unaltered, but clarification made in merchants favour by ruling of Sept. 22 as per the enclosed documents (ff.101, 103). His comments on the above. Agrees that the three Maltese warships had nodesign against Great Britain, and their commander had explicitly denied it. They are now cruising off the coast for two or three weeks before returning to Malta. English sailors captured from a pirate ship in Brazil now in prison at Lisbon. Has interceded for Thomas who will probably be released soon, but the others seem to be guilty. Cases of Mr Johnson (who wants to live in Brazil), and of Protestant worship at Oporto still pending. Cardinal da Cunha in high favour.
Date and place: 1722 Nov 5, NS Lisbon.
