Folio 59: Thomas Lumley to Lord Carteret. Alarm of the merchants at the new law against smuggling (f.55), and protest by all the foreign consuls. Secretary of State disclaims any responsibility for originating it. Long-standing dispute over custody of a natural child between Mr. Richard Whinnyat and Florence Angovi and relevant correspondence thereon (ff.61-66). Asks Lord Carteret to intervene and resolve the matter with Galvão, Portuguese envoy in London, which will be more easily done than at Lisbon.
