Folio 78: William Poyntz to the Lords Commissioners of Trade and Plantations. Report on the British Fish Trade to Portugal, consisting chiefly of dried cod from Newfoundland and New England. Very profitable and beneficial, although it has declined somewhat lately owing to defects in salting and curing the cod. His suggestions for remedying this at Newfoundland and New England, respectively. Defects in British pilchard and herring curing, which last the Dutch do much better. Heavy duties levied in Portugal contrary to Treaty rights.
