Folio 31: William Poyntz to James Craggs. Portuguese seizure of over £5,000 worth of gold and silver bullion and some gold dust from a British ship bound for London. Letters also seized but returned unopened on Worsley's representations. Exportation of gold although forbidden on pain of death, is unavoidable owing to unfavourable balance of Portugal's trade in wine, oil, salt, and fruit, which can only be balanced by export of Brazilian gold, as Portuguese authorities are well aware. Wishes gold export could be legalised, as he thinks it is in the Luso-Swedish treaties of 1641 and 1708. Return of Admiral Cornwallis without having been able to make peace with the Moors, `which is a great check to our navigation'.
Date and place: 1718 May 21, NS Lisbon.
