Folio 208: Henry Worsley to James Stanhope. French have asked the Portuguese government for leave to settle four families in Brazil, at Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, and Pernambuco, as the British already have the right to do. Thinks that the French have now got leave fora Consul at Bahia, and suspects there is a secret Franco-Portuguese treaty of commerce, though Portuguese Secretary of State still strongly denies it. Frontier negotiations.
