Folio 181: Henry Worsley to Hon. James Stanhope. Thanks for the extension of his assignment to Lisbon. Has been compelled to borrow heavily to meet his extraordinary expenses, not yet having received any of his allowances. Reasons why he still thinks that the consulage should be divided (cf. f.135) despite opposition of some of the merchants at London. Portuguese anxious to obtain British guarantee of their Utrecht Peace, which may be useful in concluding a revised treaty of commerce on more favourable terms to Great Britain. Is writing more frankly as he thinks there is now less danger of British diplomatic dispatches being intercepted and read by foreign ministers at London. Encloses letter of thanks to the King (f.184), and another for forwarding if necessary.
