Folio 172: John Methuen to Sir Charles Hedges. News of Marlborough's great victory has greatly encouraged King Pedro who has urged the Marquis das Minas to advance on Madrid. Way to Madrid lies invitingly open, but no news received from Aragon, Catalonia, and Valencia fronts. His optimistic hopes that Madrid will fall very soon, and Andalusia then declare for Charles III. Has suggested to King Pedro that Portuguese forces in Alentejo should invade Andalusia and join the English in besieging Cadiz. Portuguese unwilling to see Cadiz in English hands and have suggested instead an English landing at Vigo.
