Folio 131: John Methuen to Sir Charles Hedges. But for Portuguese procrastination `our Army might with ease and without striking a stroke have been this day at Madrid'. Encloses copy of Lord Galway's letter (f.111), and his memorial to the Marquis of Alegrete (f.122) but Schonenberg refused angrily to back him up. At his insistance, Portuguese now profess to be willing to march to Madrid via Salamanca, but he doubts their sincerity. Sends relevant correspondence over the 8 March incident (ff. 117, 124-26), for which he disclaims all responsibility. Encloses copy of Marquis of Alegrete's letter (f.118) and Diogo de Mendonça Corte-Real's letter (f.115). King will not give Lord Galway command over the Portuguese but will order that Galway and Methuen see all his dispatches to Marquis das Minas. Is afraid that nothing good or fair can be expected from Portugal.
