Folio 124: John Methuen to Sir Charles Hedges. Replies at length to his private letter of April 9 (see f.121), and explains why the operations on the frontier are proceeding so slowly and badly. Many of the ministers still pro-French, and Portuguese are very short of money. Many of the English troops were sick when they arrived and then were encamped in a very unhealthy site. Adequate remounts unavailable. Inefficiency of the Duke of Schomberg, about whom King Pedro complains bitterly and Schomberg is equally bitter in his complaints against the Portuguese.
