Folio 120: John Methuen to Sir Charles Hedges. Animadversions on English naval strategy and the danger to Sir George Rooke's fleet in the Mediterranean if the two French fleets should join. Tardiness of the allied land preparations has enabled the Franco-Spanish forces to forestall the projected allied offensive by invading Portugal themselves. King Pedro is, however, displaying great firmness and resolution, and has left for the frontier. Methuen being too ill to accompany him, has sent his son, Paul, instead.
Date and place: 1704 May 31, NS Lisbon.
