Folio 107: John Methuen to Earl of Nottingham. Defects in the supplies and equipment of the English forces, high death rate from the bad food provided on board the transports and large number of officers absent without leave [cf. f.104]. Long account of his vain efforts to dissuade Sir George Rooke from sailing with the whole Anglo-Dutch fleet to the Mediterranean, thus leaving coast of Portugal defenceless, contrary to the terms of the Anglo-Portuguese Treaty and to the great annoyance of King Pedro and his ministers. Asks to be relieved and replaced by someone of more prestige and authority.
Date and place: 1704 May 7 and 8, NS Lisbon.
