Folio 89: John Methuen to Earl of Nottingham. Has received the ratification of his commercial treaty (f.81). Thinks it unlikely that the King of Portugal can or will spare any troops to go in the fleet on Sir George Rooke's projected expedition. Portuguese have a windfall of about three million pieces of eight from a Spanish galleon wrecked in the Algarve. King of Spain and his entourage very pleased with hospitality they had in England and correspondingly dissatisfied with what they get here. Shortages of military equipment. Difficulties over the appointments of Portuguese and allied officers in the high command and obstructive attitude of the Duke of Schomberg. Lord Slane (f.88) has made a good impression on the King of Portugal, but Methuen will await the Queen's instructions concerning him. Many of the English troops are sick but are being well looked after. King of Portugal intends to take the field on May 8.
