Folio 62: Paul Methuen to James Vernon. His efforts to get compensation from the Cacheo Company and the Court at Madrid for the gold and silver bullion seized by the Spaniards at Havana (ff.57-60). The Imperial ambassador has had his farewell audiences, but remains at Lisbon incognito. French ambassador has submitted as coming from an Italian merchant, Antonio Marizoni, a project to the Portuguese government for allowing a strictly limited Portuguese trade with England and Holland in the event of war with France and Spain. It is being kept very secret, but Methuen is doing his best to disabuse the Court that they could get away with this, or with anything else save either joining the Allies or else maintaining a strict neutrality. Requests further guidance and instructions. Sends bill of his extraordinary expenses via his father.
Date and place: 1702 Mar 7, NS Lisbon.
