Folio 50: Paul Methuen to James Vernon. Interview with King Pedro, to whom he said that war between England and France and Spain was now unavoidable in view of Franco-Spanish recognition of the Pretender, and asked for a formal declaration of Portuguese neutrality. King still declined to give this categorically but profuse in friendly assurances. Thinks Portuguese will not decide what to do unless and until war actually breaks out. French guns and gunners at Lisbon, as also the sixty grenadiers (f.47) all maintained at French expense. Illness of the Secretary of State has put a stop to all diplomatic business.
