Folio 47: Paul Methuen to James Vernon. Arrival of a party of French grenadiers at Lisbon, allegedly `only to satisfy the King's curiousity.' King and Secretary of State, constantly pressed by him, but still decline to give a positive declaration of neutrality, though profuse in their assurances they do not want or intend a breach with England and Holland. French ambassador and Papal Nuncio have pressed King Pedro to follow French and Spanish formal recognition of the Pretender, but King has refused to do so and seems likely to retain that attitude. Enters caveat about the danger of Jesuit influence with King and Court.
