Folio 30: Paul Methuen to James Vernon. French recognition of the Pretender as the Prince of Wales is unlikely to be followed by the Portuguese. Is encouraging them to maintain a strict neutrality in the event of an Anglo-French War, `which is the greatest thing we can expect from them as affairs stand'. Departure of Chateaurenaud's squadron. Movements of Portuguese warships. Has protested against some undesirable innovations in the Customs House procedures, which have been abolished accordingly (f.29).
