Folio 138: John Methuen to Sir John Trenchard. French fleet reported to have passed the Algarve and Gibraltar for the Mediterranean, but he doubts it. Has pressed King Pedro to help Spaniards in Catalonia against French. King says English fleet will be welcome off coast but cannot be guaranteed provisions as they are so scarce by reason of the drought (f.132). Portuguese ambassadors nominated to go to Vienna and Paris, and Methuen's speculations on their real business. Has obtained pardon and freedom for six English pirates sentenced to be hanged for piracy on coast of Brazil. Has thanked King for sending from Mazagão nine English slaves escaped from captivity in Morocco.
