Folio 105: John Methuen to Sir John Trenchard. King Pedro II still very irresolute about joining the Grand Alliance, and why. If he does, it will only be after he has received the most categorical assurances (i) that the Allies will pay for all Portuguese troops detailed to serve in Spain; (ii) a strong Anglo-Dutch squadron must winter somewhere near or in Portuguese ports. Thinks no corn from the Azores is being re-exported to France, but will continue to be vigilant. Contraband lead, on the other hand, often comes from England and is re-exported to France, the latest instance being the São João Baptista, which brought 900 pigs of lead and she has now gone back for more (f.54). Forwards `a great packet' belatedly received from Barbados. King has now ordered salvaged goods in the Algarve to be delivered to their owners. Protests over capture of an English ship by the French off the bar. Asks to be reimbursed quickly for his disbursement to distressed seamen, who would otherwise go to Brazil, Portuguese India, or neutral shipping.
Date and place: 1693 Dec 2/12 Lisbon.
