Folio 97: John Methuen to Earl of Nottingham. Great scarcity of corn in France, but corn in Portugal also scarce and the Azores are unlikely to be able to spare any for France. Portuguese now being cooperative again over the salvaged goods in the Algarve. Queen-Dowager delighted with Queen Mary's letter, but as she cannot write English is replying through Lady Tukes. Methuen now very intimate with the King's Confessor whom he is cultivating as best he can. Wishes he had authority to bribe four lading men. For want of English ships the wines are now being exported in Portuguese, but insured at London.
Date and place: 1693 Nov 18/28 Lisbon.
