Folio 211: Consul Maynard to [Sir Leoline Jenkins]. His own and the Prince-Regent's delight at news of Charles II's escape from the recent abortive plot [= The Rye House Plot]. Arrest of a black English subject by the Inquisition and Maynard's vain efforts to get his release. A p.s. of Sept. 4/14 gives news of the death of Afonso VI, seizure of English black cloth by the Portuguese authorities, and expectation that the Queen will die soon.
Date and place: 1683 Aug 1/11 Lisbon.
