Folio 196: Charles Fanshaw to [Sir Leoline Jenkins]. Portuguese have a strict legal case over the contraband bullion, but ought to react favourably to Charles II's intervention on behalf of the merchants. Discussion of who may have tipped them off in the first place. Still negotiating over the adjustment of the Queen's Portion. Illness of the Queen of Portugal. Thinks Prince-Regent's reported offer to connive at a chaplain being allowed to Oporto in the guise of a merchant is insufficient.
Date and place: 1683 July 5, NS Lisbon.
