Folio 147: Francis Parry to Secretary Coventry. Acknowledges his letter about protecting the murderer, Allen Hutchinson (f.139), who had been a great personal friend of his; but the murder was so inexcusable and atrocious that Hutchinson is entitled to nothing savea fair trial. Even if found guilty, he is unlikely to be sentenced to death, `it being unusual here to put a gentleman to death for murder, though never so notorious.' Difficulties with Consul Maynard who is reluctant to obey the order prohibiting the use of English flags of convenience. A newly-appointed governor of Madeira has orders to enquire into the affront to H.M.S. Hunter (f.139), though he probably will not leave for the island before midsummer.
