Folio 98: Francis Parry to Lord Arlington. Is pressing for sufficient powers to be sent to Dom Francisco de Mello to negotiate a new treaty of commerce, and an alliance against the Dutch. Secretary hedged, but Parry at an audience with the Prince-Regent asked for (i) better payment of the Queen's Portion, especially the consignations on Brazil (ii) redress of merchants' grievances (iii) join the English in the war against the Dutch. The Prince promised favourable action on (i) and (ii) and said that (iii) would be very seriously considered, but meanwhile `That this matter be managed with all secrecy imaginable'.
Date and place: 1672 June 25/July 5 Lisbon.
