Folio 72: Consul Maynard to Lord Arlington. Some of the English merchants were originally rather upset at the news of the war with Holland, but now `they all rejoice unanimously' at the King's decision. Approves of Parry's draft model for a new treaty, and he claims that many of the English privileges were not extorted by Cromwell in 1654, as claimed by Portuguese, but derive from much earlier grants and were ratified by the Anglo-Portuguese Treaty of 1642. Complains of arrest and imprisonment of Joseph Hardwick (f.68), by the Lisbon Municipal Council.
Date and place: 1672 May 7/17 Lisbon.
