Folio 124: Sir Robert Southwell to Joseph Williamson. The Ex-Secretary of State may return to his post. Dutch warships cruising against Barbary corsairs. Unfavourable reaction at Lisbon after Captain Langston, R.N., had allowed the Barbary pirates to take a Portuguese ship, to which he had promised convoy. Presumes Consul Maynard has now had his confrontation at London with his accuser, Mr. Lenthall. Whatever the result, he thinks that the Consul should be in sole charge of receiving and disbursing the 2% levied on local English merchants for charity. Renews his recommendation of Lt. Col. Ramsey.
