Folio 181: Sir Robert Southwell to Lord Arlington. Portuguese have no objection to the news of the Anglo-Spanish commercial treaty signed by Sandwich at Madrid, but absolutely reject out of hand the proposed 45-year truce, since it does not give Afonso VI explicitly the title of King. Has obtained some amelioration for Don Añelo de Guzman, but can get none for the Marquis de Liche (f.121). French King has ratified the treaty of alliance with Portugal, but the concrete results so far are very disappointing. Portuguese and French naval movements and loss of a Hamburg convoy to Barbary pirates. Reactions at Lisbon to news of the naval disaster at Chatham.
Date and place: 1667 July 21/31 Lisbon.
