ED 28
1852-1876
Minute books of the board meetings of the Department of Practical Art and its successor, the Science and Art Department, including records which would otherwise be found among the records of the Board of Trade (BT). These record the decisions of the board.
The agenda from 1852 to 1865 covered various interests relating to Science and Art Schools, conditions of building grants, purchases for Museum and Library, accounts for Audit Office, South Kensington Museum and affiliated Institutions.
From 1865 until 1876, when the series was discontinued, the volumes relate solely to the South Kensington Museum and its branch museum at Bethnal Green.
A precis of these volumes for 1865-1876 and subsequent Minutes up to 1892 may be found in 'Science and Art Department: Precis of Minutes' printed by Order of the Committee of Council on Education. These printed volumes may be seen in the Department of Education and Science Library
