Folio 170. [Frederick III] elector of Brandenburg to [John William] elector palatine. Refers to the dissensions between Hessen-Cassel and the rest of the circle of Upper Rhine which have arisen from the accession of the electorate palatine, declared at Frankfurt on Aug 24/Sept 3 [1696] [Not copied here] to the agreement [between the estates] made at Limburg a/d Lahn [Hessen-Nassau] on June 6/16 [of the same year] in which the circle gave itself a [new] martial constitution. The common weal demands the raising by the circle of an efficient striking force of trained troops including the experienced Hessians, not a motley assortment of units which could only have most undesirable consequences in that it might well cause the many 'unarmed' estates of adjacent circles to stop furnishing their contingents to the circle forces currently raised. Stresses the necessity of an army ready for battle on the Upper Rhine at this juncture, when, after the peace of Savoy, France commands an unlimited manpower. Entreats the elector palatine not to deny the landgrave of Hessen-Cassel the usual contribution re-sanctioned by the Emperor for this year. Draft. [Termed 'concept' on dorse].
