Folio 86v. Shrewsbury to Stepney. Acknowledges letter of Feb 26 dealing with Harrach's proposals about sending a substantial portion of the Saxon forces to Hungary. The letter was laid before the King. Its contents, as well as the subsequent 'private' mission of a Saxon officer [to the King] has caused the King to resolve that if the Elector follows the Emperor's invitation to let 6,000-8,000 troops march into Hungary, the Emperor should send back the Brandenburg contingent and the remainder of the electoral troops, i.e. 4,000-6,000, deployed under margrave Louis of Baden where they are most needed, joining the confederate army between the Meuse and Moselle, that is to say in the campaign against France; in which case the King does not feel obliged to pay the whole subsidy according to the treaty, but only 'his proportion of the subsidys according to the number of men so employed' [i.e. against France]. Stepney is to press this point with all emphasis. Headed 'Additional Instructions from duke of Shrewsbury'. [Extract].
