Description

Folio 105. From Blathwayt. Encloses reply from the King to a 'long and formal' letter from the duke administrator [i.e. guardian - To his nephew, prince Eberhard Louis, a minor] Frederick Charles of Württemberg who has sent baron Kruse as his special courier, who is receiving a copy of the King's letter and one of his, Blathwayt's, letter to Stepney of the same date (see f.107, q.s.) translated into French. Stepney will find the duke [who is at Vienna] as well informed as he is. The duke is 'very pressing' for Stepney's 'solicitations' on his behalf and Stepney is instructed to behave himself 'with prudence' towards the Emperor and his court, and 'with respect' to the duke 'whose case may be very hard but such perhaps as may not be attended with the satisfaction he desires'. He is to give the duke a 'civill answer' concerning his pretensions to the government of Maastricht and Cleeves which the King cannot encourage. [Otto Henry] baron Friesen, envoy of the Elector of Saxony to Holland, was at Loo to 'settle' the operations of his master's troops, but the King cannot take a final resolution before hearing further from Margrave Louis of Baden; thus Friesen has gone to the Hague to make the Elector's compliments to the States.
