Description

Folio 83. From Nottingham. He has laid Stepney's dispatches of Jan 11/21 and 14/24 before the King who approves of Stepney's discouraging the ministers at Vienna from expecting supplies from England. The sums voted by Parliament [to carry on the war], 'how great soever' and 'proportion'd to ye troopes & fleet', may be easily exceeded by the actual, the 'real expence'. However, the King may be induced to contribute 'something more' towards the support of the Duke of Savoy, but it will not be proper for Stepney, as yet, to raise any hopes of it. The Squadron destined for the Mediterranean is ready and will speedily sail and, when joined by that of Spain, suffice to support any attempts the Duke should think fit to make there. The King fully agrees with the margrave of Baden in 'that he should not be limited in the exercise of that command [i.e. on the Rhine], for the expecting of orders may frustrate many great designes and deprive him of such opportunities as may never be retrieved'. The King does not think he can spare any of his infantry to serve on the Rhine, but all matters of this kind will be 'better adjusted' at the Hague when the margrave will be very welcome to the King.
