Folio 82. From Blathwayt. He has read to the King copies of two of Stepney's dispatches addressed to Nottingham who had not yet submitted them. The King fully approves of the 'distinct and full' accounts of his discussions with [Theodore Henry Althet] Stratman [Austrian court chancellor] and [Leopold William] Königsegg [imperial vice-chancellor] and prince Louis of Baden; and has taken 'particular notice of the prince's zealous expressions and readiness to serve on the Rhine this campaign' and commands Stepney to thank Louis for them and to express his approval of the measures proposed by him. He, Stepney, is to press on all occasions, and particularly at conferences, that Louis be 'employed upon the Rhine this year' and 'that the necessary preparations hastened for it', and is to report speedily on his progress and success in that respect. He hopes to get Stepney an allowance of £3 per diem.
