Folio 78. From Blathwayt. Stepney is not 'to stick' at Vienna 'so as to be useless to His Maj.ty' who is to give him a title and credential 'in the quality of his agent or commissary'. He is to expect his dispatches soon. 'Nor are you, I hope, to live by this air of dignity, but I will immediately proceed to get your allowances encreased or doubled that you may appear to act in a style answerable to your station'. Refers to Madame d'Alençon's 'discovery' which the King thinks of little or no foundation. Wishes Stepney to continue his relation of the court of Brandenburg and to commence his reports from Vienna. PS.: Observes that the 'augmentation' which is to follow will give him a 'good pretention for the like at Ratisbone'. Adds, 'Pray let me know what lady you have in your eye for the Elector of Bavaria'. [See also folio 74].
