Description

Folio 161. To [?, at Vienna]. [Recipient not indicated. ? Bruynincx]. Acknowledges letter of [Oct] 14 and 17 [N.S.]. He and Plantamour survived an accident to their coach. - Does not think that the [question of] Schöning's release is such important an obstacle to the negotiation as the continuing non-arrival of Boineburg, for the Emperor must take the first steps in the negotiation. Ill-intentioned people might persuade the elector that the delay showed how little the Emperor valued his friendship. Asks recipient to tell Consbruch that he, Stepney, will write when he has some news to impart. - Is pleased that recipient and [Dr Theodore] Cock [Dutch envoy to the Holy see] have succeeded in assisting baron Munster. - Holtzbrinck has not yet re-appeared [from Vienna] and Stepney thinks that the elector of Brandenburg is now less concerned about Schöning than he was before. - The elector [of Saxony] will probably raise five regiments, more to strengthen his power than because of the Schöning affair. They will be paid for by Saxony, by English subsidies and probably by contributions from the Emperor, yet Stepney does not wish to be involved in discussions about this until the question of the subsidy for the present 12,000 men is settled. - Refers to incidents between Saxon and Hessian troops, both being quartered in Hanau. - Blathwayt has probably not replied to recipient because of his preoccupation with finding winter quarters for the allied troops in Flanders. Suggests that he might also write to Trenchard and Vernon. - Does not think the King would choose [Francis Taaffe, fourth viscount Taaffe and third earl of] Carlingford as envoy to Vienna, as he is an Irish Catholic and presently tutor to the queen of Poland's children, bus asks recipient to give Carlingford his compliments if he appears at court. - Has had an audience of the countess Rochlitz. - Recipient did well to open letters from baron Munster, addressed to him, Stepney, since he could best assist him. - Baron [Christopher Henry] Galen [envoy of Münster at Vienna] will be rather enraged by the treaty concerning Ratzeburg.
