Description

Folio 149v. Montague to Stepney. All his, Stepney's, arrears and one quarter in advance will be paid him in the next few days by the King's orders. The King, before whom many of Stepney's dispatches have been laid by Blathwayt, has a high regard for his services which will soon be further expressed by raising his character. Stepney's friends at court, and particularly Godolphin, are 'a little concerned' that Cresset should be sent to the house of [Brunswick-] Lüneburg as envoy 'while you have the most troublesome employment without title'. This has been represented [to the King] as a hardship, and they will continue to press for his advancement until his allowance is raised to [£]5 per day. - Notwithstanding the misfortunes experienced this year he does not doubt that parliament will support the present government and carry on the war. Great changes at court are being talked about. Trenchard seemed to think the King intended to make him, Stepney, envoy to Saxony, so at least he told Godolphin. Wants to hear from him, for since as the King comes over 'soo soon', he will not write to Blathwayt, but wishes to have Stepney's 'sentiments against the King comes over'. Concludes: 'When you are advanced to a high post, I hope Prior may be sent to Ratisbonne'.
