Folio 144. To Prior. Motivated by Cresset's having 'after long struggling work'd himself into an envoyship', an advancement 'so far from disgusting me that it will make me more laborious at least in my own justification'. Speculates on his and Prior's future in thediplomatic service. - Shares Prior's belief that after the King's return there will be a 'new sett of publique ministers' and admonishes him earnestly not to be as 'foolishly modest' as he has been but to strive as single-mindedly as he is able to for his own advancement in the service. - Mentions the friendly send-off he had from the Emperor's chief ministers no less than the Spanish ambassador [Borgomañero] 'who has great credit with the King' and who offered [of his own accord to write to Portland in appreciation of his services.
