Folio 20. To [Francis] Stratford [Hamburg]. Expresses disappointment about the delay in the payment of the subsidies [to Saxony] despite his appeals to Trenchard, Montague and Godolphin [first lord of the treasury]. Is also unaware of any presentation, so far, of the 3,000 rixdollars to the [Saxon] 'Great chamberlain' [Bose] 'designed' by Heeckeren. Assumes that Blathwayt is too busy to refer to his, Stepney's, past letters about a present to 'the fair one' [i.e. countess Rochlitz]. Enlarges on the insufficiency of his own position as a mere 'commissary' and hopes that when it comes to the signing of the treaty his status will be raised.- Cresset is to have Colt's book of orders and instructions from the secretary of state, but the book containing the record of his negotiations [Editor's italics] he has never seen. Cresset should also dispatch to him, Stepney, the letter book of his period at Dresden. The elector's birthday on the previous day was celebrated 'in Philis's appartments' [the residence of countess Rochlitz].
