Folio 14. To [Blathwayt]. Thanks him for his 'continuall patronage' and guidance. Compares him with other benefactors, Montague and Vernon. Thinks Vienna was the best post for him, though he is ready to serve at 'all corners of the earth'. But as for Ratisbon, 'that august assembly is now so much debased that we find nothing but pedantry and chicane'. He could easily go there from Vienna 'when they begin to talk in earnest of peace'. At Vienna, he left only friends, such as Strattmann and Königsegg: believes the Spanish ambassador [Borgormañero] has written to Portland to assure the King that he, Stepney, was 'no unprofitable servant there'. Touches upon a possible increase of his allowance and would be content with the title of 'resident' though not 'agent', which is 'too vulgar an appellation there where there are above 100 called so who are only sollicitors from severall princes to the councill aulique' [Corrected by Stepney from 'Reichshoffrath'].
