Folio 8v. To [?Trenchard]. Letters from the duke of Croy, dated July 17/27, 'before Belgrade', have reached Vienna. On that day the trenches were opened. Within the town there are 7,000 Janissaries and 1,000 Spahis. It is thought the 3,000 that were detached for Temesvar have 'gott over again by water', the imperial forces being unable to prevent their passage, they having only few ships, and admiral Assemburg [imperial commandant of the Danube flotilla] is not expected back at Vienna from Holland in time to get to the army before the town is taken, 'for we do not think the siege can be rais'd because we hear nothing of a Turkish army'.
