Folio 7v. To Vernon. Encloses copies of his letters to Blathwayt. Asks for advice on what he writes in cipher [not copied here], which he has not communicated to the secretary [i.e. Nottingham] but to whom Vernon may show what he has 'interpreted'. Observes: 'You know best what instructions Mr Harbord had on that point. This seems to be the crisis of his good or bad fortune, thô still I hope he may not act Proteus as much as he has done hitherto & may find a way to escape when they think they are most sure of him'. Thinks 'this precaution they [i.e. the Turks] take before they come to treat is a certain sign they are in earnest; that the peace may at last come as I began to guess in some of my late letters'. Holograph.
