Description

Folio 90. To Lexington. Enclosing extracts of various items of his own recent correspondence, traces the history of his current inactivity and indeterminate position and of Friesen's unauthorized passing from [Saxon] electoral service into that of the King and assesses the implications and possible consequences thereof. Stresses the necessity of maintaining 'good understanding' between the King and the elector, hopes that recipient will find occasion to 'alleviate [Editor's italics] the matter both to the elector & Mr Haxthausen by telling them that the King had such an entire confidence in the elector's affection towards him that he took it for granted that the request he made him in behalf of Frizen would be readily comply'd with, & upon that assurance made use of him'. The French have passed the Rhine and a good understanding is absolutely necessary at this time between the landgrave [of Hessen-Cassel] and margrave Louis 'which Frizen was dispatch'd in all hast to negotiate, your own intention and goodwill will furnish ['furnish'd', Ms], your l[ord]ship with more powerfull arguments to plead for Frizen whose conduct wee must endeavour to excuse but can never justify' .
